Thomas Rhett has become one of the biggest names in country music over the past few years. He took Music City by storm with songs that mixed the southern swagger with pop hooks that truly were a hit to fans. So, it was no surprise when Thomas Rhett songs were among the most played tracks in the genre.

1. He is a native of Valdosta, Georgia. 

Born on March 30, 1990, Thomas Rhett Akins Jr. grew up following his father on his singing tours. This explains why he spent his early childhood with some of the biggest names in country music, like Reba McEntire and Blake Shelton.

2. His father is also a country star. 

Rhett’s father, Thomas Rhett Akins, Sr. – more famously known as Rhett Akins – has been in the country music scene since the 1990s and enjoyed several hits. Today, he spends most of his time writing songs for artists like Luke Bryan, Jason Aldean, and Blake Shelton. 

3. His parents divorced when he was nine. 

Because of his father’s career demands, Rhett’s parents divorced and happily remarried.

4. He used to play drums in his father’s band. 

When Rhett was younger, his father would take him up the stage during shows, where he would play the drums. 

5. He went to college in Music City. 

The country singer went to Lipscomb University in Nashville, where he first took Kinesiology but dropped out after the first four days of class. He later on picked up a business major but dropped out as well after finding out that he had to take an Excel spreadsheet class. Without any clue on which path he wanted to go down, Rhett ended up doing organizational communications.

6. He played baseball and soccer in high school. 

He even thought of playing soccer forever until an injury permanently put those plans on hold.

7. His music career began at frat parties. 

And it proved to be a great training ground for the young country singer.

8. He’s a married man. 

In 2012, Rhett married his best friend Lauren, a philanthropist with a nursing degree. The two first met when they were just first-graders and briefly dated when they were 15. While their first attempt at a relationship didn’t work out, they remained friends and eventually found each other again.

9. And he married young!

He got some convincing from fellow country singer Luke Bryan to ignore those who said that he and Lauren were too young.

10. He made country music history with his father. 

In 2013, Rhett and his father became the first father-and-son duo who wrote, co-wrote, and performed five of the Top 10 singles on the country music charts.
