In 2018, Whitey Morgan and the 78’s released one of the grittiest songs in country music, “Honky Tonk Hell,” as part of their album Hard Times and White Lines

Known for being a honky tonk expert, Whitey Morgan has never failed to impress his fans when he releases top hits like this one. Throughout his career, he has continuously been working with different artists to expand his musical scope, but he always ends up coming back to his honky tonk roots.

“Honky Tonk Hell” is one of those ear-catching songs country pubs tend to play the whole night long. It has that gritty tone that makes it so many. Accompanied by Morgan’s deep voice and the strong background instruments, “Honky Tonk Hell” is one perfect song for cowboy movies indeed.

Although the honky tonk style is not that popular anymore, Morgan and his band have been tirelessly producing honky tonk music to keep the spirit of the style alive. They are not afraid to showcase their talents in ways that are opposite to what country music mostly does today.

As we dive right into the meaning of the song, we’ll eventually find out what made this song a true honky tonk anthem for many unlucky souls.

Meaning Behind the Song

Written by Whitey Morgan, the song is simply about getting caught up with addiction, which many people can relate to.

Because of his amazing craftsmanship for writing amazing songs, he was able to convey the message in the most creative way possible. Throughout the song, the “man,” who is the protagonist and a singer on a tour, seems to have been caught up in a spiral loop he can’t get out of.

As money, women, and fame got into him, the protagonist can’t seem to escape this place he now calls the “Honky Tonk Hell.”

Addiction is something that can’t be changed overnight. However, as long as you put in the work and strive hard to become better, the day will eventually become brighter. You can listen to Whitey Morgan and the 78’s song “Honky Tonk Hell” below.
