In 1996, legendary country singer Willie Nelson released one of the most heartfelt covers of the classic gospel song “What A Friend We Have in Jesus” as part of his album, How Great Thou Art

The song was originally released by Joseph Scriven as a poem in 1855. It was not until 1868 that Charles Crozat Converse released a tune for the song. Since then, the song has become quite a staple hit not just in Christian churches but among country singers as well.

Willie Nelson’s Cover of “What a Friend We Have in Jesus”

Willie Nelson is one of the known country singers who released a version of the hymn. Being one of the most sought-after singers of his generation, many listeners were looking forward to his rendition – and it seems like he didn’t disappoint any of his fans.

His version was more mellow compared to other covers. Instead of using a fiddle or guitar, Nelson decided to change things up based on his style and used the piano as his main instrumental for the song – and it seems like he made the right choice.

Upon its release, it immediately became one of Willie Nelson’s greatest hits. Aside from giving listeners that fresh listening experience, the overall vibe of his rendition is also extraordinary. His raspy yet wistful voice, accompanied by the piano’s mellow sound, is just a match made in heaven.

Aside from its heartfelt lyrics, Nelson’s overall performance reflected his undying love for Jesus. Nelson has the talent to express his deepest emotions through his performances, and that is what listeners love about him.

So if you haven’t checked out Willie Nelson’s heartfelt cover of “What A Friend We Have in Jesus,” then what are you waiting for? You can listen to his performance below.
