Shedding her pop roots, Demi Lovato rocked out with country star Brad Paisley for the “Without a Fight” duet.
The guitar-fueled country song was released in 2016 and was supposed to be part of Paisley’s then-upcoming album Love and War; unfortunately, the song did not make the final tracklist. Still, it captured the hearts of many country fans as it peaked at No. 16 on the Billboard Country Airplay chart. The song even won a Teen Choice Award that same year.
A Sexy Single You Shouldn’t Miss
Written by Brad Paisley with Kelley Lovelace and Lee Thomas Miller, “Without a Fight” tells the tale of a couple entangled in a relationship filled with fights. They ended up regretting some of the things they said, and “got a crazy idea, how ’bout maybe tonight, we make up without a fight.”
Brad Paisley wanted the song “to have that feeling of angst in a relationship.” He said, “Everybody goes through a period where you’re fighting a lot, I think. Sometimes that can be a good thing for your relationship. That conflict can lead to making up.”
And when the song was finally completed, he knew the story needed a female perspective. “By the time the song leads to this loud ending … it needed to be the right female voice,” says the country star.
Luckily, Paisley met Demi Lovato during the iHeartRadio Music Awards in 2016, where he backed Lovato on guitar as she gave an incredible live performance of one of her songs, “Stone Cold.” This has set the wheels in motion as it became clear “Without a Fight” needed her. Lovato can hit high notes as nobody else can, and her voice complements Paisley extremely well. As a singer, Paisley said the pop star is “otherworldly.”
The song’s music video is as good as the song too. It kicked off with Paisley rocking out with his band and jamming hard on his guitar in a warehouse setting that could host underground fights over the weekend.
Lovato got in the picture sitting backward in a chair. As the song’s tempo picked up, she jumped out of the chair to push Paisley out from underneath the mic to grab it for herself. Soon, the duo came together under a hanging microphone, belting out powerful lyrics.
As the video concludes, Lovato completely knocked Paisley’s hat onto the floor to audible laughs of the people behind the camera.
